Twinings is one of the world's oldest and most iconic tea brands, with a history dating back to 1706 when Thomas Twining opened Britain's first known tea room at No. 216 Strand, London. The brand is credited with popularizing tea-drinking in the West and famously creating the globally recognized 'Earl Grey' blend at the request of Prime Minister Charles Grey in the 1830s.
While originally a family-owned British enterprise, Twinings was acquired by Associated British Foods (ABF) in 1964. Today, it remains a pillar of ABF's grocery division. Although the brand maintains its historical identity and technical headquarters in the United Kingdom, much of its large-scale manufacturing and packaging was moved to a state-of-the-art facility in Poland in the late 2000s, with some specialty production still occurring in the UK and sourcing ongoing from traditional tea-growing regions in China and India.
