The Höfner 500/1, famously known as the Violin Bass, is one of the most iconic musical instruments in history. First designed in 1955 and launched at the Frankfurt Music Messe in 1956, it was created by Walter Höfner as a lightweight, easy-to-play alternative to the upright double bass. The instrument gained global immortality when Paul McCartney of The Beatles purchased one in Hamburg in 1961, making its distinct silhouette and warm, thumping tone a hallmark of 1960s pop and rock music.

While the premium 'Reissue' and 'Master' series models continue to be handcrafted in Höfner's workshops in Hagenau, Germany, the brand has expanded its production to meet global demand. The 'Contemporary' (HCT) and 'Ignition' (HI) versions are manufactured in specialized facilities in China and Indonesia respectively, offering the classic aesthetic at various price points. Despite these international manufacturing legs, the brand remains deeply rooted in its European heritage.

Höfner is a family-owned company that has maintained its independence for over 130 years. Founded by Karl Höfner in 1887 in Schönbach (now part of the Czech Republic), the company relocated to West Germany after World War II. Today, it stands as one of the few remaining major independent European instrument manufacturers, continuing to produce high-quality stringed instruments and guitars for musicians worldwide.
