SEAT (Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo) is a major Spanish automobile manufacturer with its roots dating back to 1950. Originally founded by the Instituto Nacional de Industria (INI) with the assistance of Fiat, the brand was created to provide mobility for the Spanish population during the post-civil war era. Headquartered in Martorell, Spain, SEAT has grown from a local manufacturer into a global brand known for its youthful and sporty design language.
While the brand is quintessentially Spanish in identity and design, its ownership shifted significantly in the 1980s. Following the end of its technical cooperation with Fiat, the Volkswagen Group began an acquisition process, eventually becoming the sole shareholder. Today, SEAT is a fully integrated subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. Most SEAT models are designed and manufactured at the Martorell plant near Barcelona, though some production is shared across various Volkswagen Group facilities in Europe to optimize global supply chains.
