Matchbox is one of the most iconic brands in the toy industry, specializing in die-cast scale model vehicles. Originally founded in London in 1953 by the Lesney Products company, it gained its name because the original models were sold in boxes similar in size and appearance to those used for matches. The brand's early success centered on creating affordable, detailed miniatures of everyday vehicles.
Over the decades, ownership shifted from Lesney to Universal Toys and eventually to Tyco Toys. In 1997, the brand was acquired by Mattel, Inc., the American toy giant. Today, Mattel manages Matchbox alongside its other legendary brand, Hot Wheels. While Matchbox was born in the United Kingdom, its manufacturing operations are now globalized, with most production occurring in Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Malaysia, to supply the international market.
