DAHON was founded in 1982 by Dr. David T. Hon, a former laser physicist at Hughes Aircraft Corporation, who sought to create a more sustainable and portable mode of transportation. Based on his vision of 'green mobility,' the brand pioneered the modern folding bike architecture, securing numerous patents that eventually became the industry standard for most folding bicycles today.

The brand's manufacturing is centered in its own ISO 9001 certified facilities. While the company started with a significant factory in Taiwan, the bulk of its modern production occurs in Shenzhen, China, to meet global demand. DAHON also maintains assembly lines and partnerships across Europe and Southeast Asia to facilitate local distribution.

Ownership of the brand remains under the Dahon Group, which is still led by the Hon family. Dr. David Hon continues to serve as the CEO, ensuring the company maintains its focus on engineering innovation and environmental sustainability. The brand operates through a network of international subsidiaries and distributors, solidified by its global headquarters in Illinois, United States, and its primary operational base in China.
