The brand was originally launched in 1983 by the Sunmark Corporation under the Willy Wonka Candy Factory brand. It gained rapid popularity for its dual-flavor packaging and crunchy texture.

The product is primarily manufactured in the United States, specifically in facilities such as the one in Itasca, Illinois. Over the decades, the brand has transitioned through several major corporate owners. Originally part of Nestlé's confectionery portfolio after they acquired Sunmark in 1988, the brand was later sold as part of a multi-billion dollar deal to the Ferrero Group in 2018. Today, Nerds is managed under the Ferrara Candy Company, which is a subsidiary of Ferrero.
