Naked Juice was founded in 1983 in Santa Monica, California, by Jimmy Barela. Originally, the brand focused on selling glass-bottled juices directly to beachgoers, capitalizing on the demand for fresh, preservative-free fruit drinks. This laid the foundation for the brand's identity as a premium, health-oriented juice and smoothie provider.
In 2007, the brand was acquired by PepsiCo, which significantly expanded its distribution network. While Naked operated under PepsiCo for over a decade, the brand underwent another major ownership shift in early 2022. PepsiCo sold a majority stake in its juice business—including Naked and Tropicana—to PAI Partners, a private equity firm. This led to the formation of Tropicana Brands Group, which now oversees the production and global strategy of the Naked brand.
Manufacturing remains centered primarily in North America, with significant production facilities located in California. The brand continues to focus on its 'no added sugar' philosophy, using juices and purees to provide nutrient-dense smoothies that are sold in recycled plastic (rPET) bottles to align with modern sustainability efforts.
