Tony's Chocolonely is a Dutch confectionery brand that has gained international acclaim for its dedicated mission to make the chocolate industry 100% slave-free. Founded in 2005 by investigative journalist Teun van de Keuken, the brand was born out of a desire to expose and eliminate illegal child labor and modern slavery in cocoa farming, particularly in West Africa. The brand is famous for its vibrant, inequitably divided chocolate bars, which serve as a physical representation of the unequal distribution of profits in the cocoa supply chain.
While the brand is headquartered in Amsterdam and was founded in the Netherlands, the physical production of the chocolate bars primarily takes place in Belgium, specifically through the manufacturing partner Alprorose. The brand maintains a strict 'Open Chain' sourcing model to ensure traceability and fair pay for cocoa farmers beyond the standard fairtrade requirements.
Today, Tony's Chocolonely remains an independent company, though it has received significant investments to fuel its global expansion. The ultimate ownership is held by Tony's Chocolonely Holding B.V., with major stakes held by investment firms such as JamJar Investments and Verlinvest. Despite these external investments, the company remains mission-driven, headquartered in the Netherlands, and continues to influence the global chocolate market through its ethical sourcing practices and advocacy work.
