Gatorade is one of the world's most recognizable sports beverage brands, originally developed in 1965 by a team of scientists at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Led by Dr. Robert Cade, the researchers sought to create a drink that would replenish the fluids, carbohydrates, and electrolytes lost by the school's football players, the Florida Gators, during high-intensity physical activity in the heat.
Following its initial success on the athletic field, the rights to the formula were sold to Stokely-Van Camp, which transitioned the product into a commercial powerhouse. In 1983, the brand was acquired by the Quaker Oats Company, which was subsequently purchased by PepsiCo in 2001. This acquisition integrated Gatorade into one of the largest food and beverage portfolios globally, allowing for massive international scaling.
Today, Gatorade is manufactured in multiple countries to serve its global market, with significant production facilities located across the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. It remains the dominant leader in the sports drink category, continuously expanding its product line into powders, protein products, and specialized hydration technologies under the ownership of PepsiCo.
