Alpro is a pioneering brand in the plant-based food industry, founded in 1980 in Belgium. The company was created as a plant-based alternative to traditional dairy, focusing on soy-based products before expanding into almond, oat, coconut, and rice alternatives. Over the decades, it has grown from a local niche brand into a European leader in the plant-based category, driven by increasing consumer demand for sustainable and dairy-free options.
The manufacturing of Alpro products is spread across several logistics hubs in Europe. Its major production facilities are located in Wevelgem, Belgium, and Kettering, United Kingdom, ensuring distribution throughout the continent. These sites focus on reducing environmental impact, often utilizing green energy and localized sourcing for ingredients like oats and soy.
Ownership of the brand has transitioned through major international food conglomerates. In 2009, it was acquired by the American company WhiteWave Foods from the Vandemoortele Group. In 2017, the global dairy giant Danone acquired WhiteWave Foods for approximately $12.5 billion, integrating Alpro into its Essential Dairy and Plant-Based (EDP) division. Today, Alpro remains a flagship brand for Danone, representing its commitment to the plant-based revolution and healthy, sustainable nutrition.
