Michelin road maps, such as the regional map for Central Spain and Extremadura (No. 576), have a heritage dating back to 1910 when André Michelin first produced regional maps for motorists. Originally developed to encourage car travel and thereby increase tire sales, the Michelin cartography brand has since become a global standard for travel navigation and tourism.
While the brand is synonymous with French industrial history, its physical production and distribution often involve local partnerships. In the Netherlands, many travel guides and maps are distributed or co-branded with the ANWB (Royal Dutch Touring Club), as indicated by the price labeling on the packaging. The ultimate ownership remains with the Michelin Group, which is a multinational corporation headquartered in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Despite the rise of digital navigation, Michelin continues to print physical maps maintained by their dedicated cartographic departments.
