Douwe Egberts is one of the most iconic coffee brands in the world, rooted in a history that dates back to 1753 when Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thijsses opened a small grocery store in Joure, Netherlands. Over centuries, the brand evolved from a local shop into a global coffee powerhouse, recognized for its 'Pickwick' tea and its signature 'Dessert' blend coffee. The brand played a pivotal role in popularizing coffee culture in Europe, particularly through the introduction of the SENSEO® coffee pod system in collaboration with Philips.
Today, the brand is owned by JDE Peet's, which was formed after a series of mergers involving Mondelēz International and Jacobs Douwe Egberts. While the brand carries a strong Dutch identity and maintains a large roasting facility in Utrecht, its manufacturing operations are international to serve global demand. Ownership is centralized under the JAB Holding Company, a major investment firm based in Luxembourg, which manages a vast portfolio of consumer goods brands, ensuring that the legacy of those original beans from Joure continues as a global market leader.
