General Snus is one of the most iconic and historic brands in the world of tobacco, particularly within the Scandinavian market. Established in 1866 by Johan Ålander, the brand was created with the goal of developing the 'perfect snus,' a process that took over four years of experimenting with various tobacco blends. The result was a distinctive recipe featuring a base of more than 20 different tobaccos and a drop of bergamot oil, giving General its signature taste profile that remains a standard for the industry today.
The manufacturing process continues to take place in Sweden, adhering to the GothiaTek quality standard, which ensures strict controls over nicotine levels and the reduction of undesirable substances. This commitment to traditional Swedish craft is a hallmark of the brand's identity.
Originally produced by J.A. Boman & Co, the brand eventually became part of the Swedish Match portfolio. In recent years, the landscape of the global tobacco industry shifted significantly when Philip Morris International, a global leader in the tobacco and nicotine industry headquartered in the United States, acquired Swedish Match in 2022. Today, while production remains rooted in Sweden, General is owned by this international giant as part of its transition toward smoke-free products.
