G-Star RAW is a Dutch designer clothing company, founded by Jos van Tilburg in Amsterdam in 1989. The brand is world-renowned for its 'raw' or unwashed denim products, focusing on craftsmanship and architectural 3D construction of jeans. Originally named Gap Star, the name was changed to G-Star following international expansion to avoid conflict with the American brand Gap.
While the brand's creative heart and headquarters remain in Amsterdam, Netherlands, the manufacturing of G-Star products occurs globally across several countries including Vietnam, China, Bangladesh, India, and Tunisia. G-Star is committed to sustainability and transparency in its supply chain.
In late 2023, it was announced that WHP Global, a leading brand management firm based in New York, acquired a majority interest in G-Star RAW. Under this agreement, the existing G-Star shareholders, including founder Jos van Tilburg, retained a minority stake, ensuring the brand maintains its unique Dutch heritage while leveraging WHP Global's international distribution and marketing scale.
