The brand originated in Sydney, Australia, in 1914, founded by Alexander MacRae under the name 'McRae Hosiery manufacturers'. It was later renamed Speedo after the iconic 'Speedo on in your Speedo' slogan in the 1920s.

While the brand has its roots in Australian beach culture, its manufacturing footprint is global, with production facilities located in various countries to serve international markets. The brand's development led to the creation of the world's first non-wool swimsuit, sparking a century of innovation in fabric technology.

Today, the ownership of the Speedo brand is split geographically. The global rights (excluding North America) are owned by the British company Pentland Group. In North America, the brand was previously licensed to PVH Corp. but was acquired in 2020 by Pentland Group, effectively reuniting the brand under a single ultimate owner headquartered in the United Kingdom.
