Poulain is one of the oldest and most iconic chocolate brands in France, founded by Victor-Auguste Poulain in 1848 in Blois. The brand became a pioneer in industrial chocolate production and is deeply embedded in French culinary heritage, known for its distinctive orange packaging and its historical focus on both breakfast cocoa and refined chocolate bars.
Over the decades, the ownership of Poulain has transitioned through several major multinational corporations. After being acquired by Cadbury Schweppes in 1988, it later became part of the Mondelēz International portfolio following the spin-off of Kraft Foods' snack division. In a strategic shift to focus more on local European heritage brands, Mondelēz sold Poulain in 2017 to the investment group Eurazeo, which placed it under the management of its subsidiary, Carambar & Co.
Manufacturing remains primarily centered in France, notably at the historic factory in Blois. This facility continues to produce the wide range of Poulain products, including its famous Noir Extra chocolate and 'Grand Arôme' cocoa powder, maintaining the traditional recipes that have defined the brand for over 175 years.
