Solidox was a pioneering consumer-grade welding and brazing system known for its unique solid oxygen pellets (sodium chlorate based). Originally developed by the Cleanweld Products company in the 1970s, it allowed hobbyists to perform high-temperature welding tasks without the need for heavy, pressurized oxygen tanks. The system operated by burning these cylindrical pellets in a specialized pressure canister to release oxygen, which was then mixed with a fuel gas like propane.
The brand underwent several shifts in ownership during the late 20th century. It was notably acquired by the Turner Division, which became part of the Cooper Tools group. Manufacturing was historically centered in the United States, specifically in Sycamore, Illinois. Due to the inherent hazards of shipping and storing chemical oxidizers, as well as the rise of more efficient MIG and TIG welding technologies, the Solidox system was eventually discontinued and is now considered a vintage specialty item.
