Marlboro Gold Premium Tobacco is a globally recognized brand of fine-cut rolling tobacco. Originally launched in the United States by Philip Morris in 1924, Marlboro has evolved into the world's best-selling cigarette brand. The 'Gold' variant was previously known as 'Lights' and is positioned as a smoother alternative to the classic Red line.
The brand is currently owned by Philip Morris International (PMI) for all markets outside of the United States. While the brand has American roots, the tobacco products are manufactured in a vast network of facilities across Europe, Asia, and South America to supply local markets. The ownership structure is split due to the spin-off of Philip Morris International from the Altria Group in 2008, leaving Altria responsible for the US market and PMI for the rest of the world.
