Historically associated with the Mülhens family, the brand has changed hands several times over the centuries. In 2006, it was acquired from Procter & Gamble by the German fragrance house Mäurer & Wirtz, which continues to own and operate the brand today. The '4711' name refers to the house number assigned to the factory during the French occupation of Cologne in 1794.
