Spaten is a historic German beer brand originally founded in Munich in 1397. It is one of the six breweries that traditionally produce beer for the Munich Oktoberfest. The name 'Spaten' translates to 'spade' in English, referencing the brewery's emblem which features a malt shovel.
The brand underwent several mergers over the centuries, most notably combining with the Franziskaner brewery and later merging with the Löwenbräu brewery in 1997. In 2003, the group was acquired by the global beverages giant Interbrew, which eventually merged to become Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev). Today, Spaten remains a core part of Munich's brewing heritage, with its primary production concentrated in the Munich region to adhere to Purity Law standards and Reinheitsgebot traditions.
