Primus is a legendary brand in the outdoor industry, founded in Sweden in 1892 by Frans Wilhelm Lindqvist and Johan Victor Svenson. The brand became world-famous after its pressurized kerosene stoves were used by explorers like Roald Amundsen to reach the South Pole and Sir Edmund Hillary to summit Mount Everest. For decades, Primus has been a symbol of reliability and innovation in outdoor cooking hardware.
While the brand originated in Sweden, its manufacturing footprint has evolved. Most of its high-end metal products and stoves are currently manufactured in Estonia to maintain European quality standards, though some accessories are sourced globally. Historically a part of the Fenix Outdoor group, the brand underwent a significant ownership change in recent years to consolidate its position in the global trekking and camping market.
Today, Primus is owned by the Katadyn Group, a Swiss company specializing in self-sufficient nutrition and water treatment. This acquisition, completed in late 2022, brought together two of the most respected names in outdoor survival and adventure equipment, ensuring that the Swedish heritage of Primus continues under Swiss management.
