Leksands Knäckebröd is a traditional Swedish crispbread with roots dating back to the late 19th century in the Dalarna region. The brand officially took shape in 1923 when Joon Olof Olsson and Anna Olsson began selling their homemade bread from their family bakery in Leksand. It has since become one of Sweden's most iconic food exports, recognized by its distinctive blue and yellow packaging and the Dala horse logo.
Today, the product is still manufactured in the village of Häradsbygden, located within Leksand Municipality. The company prides itself on using local ingredients, including Swedish rye and water from its own spring. The production process remains close to its artisanal origins while utilizing modern sustainable practices, such as being a fossil-fuel-free bakery.
The brand remains family-owned, currently managed by the fourth and fifth generations of the Joon family. Leksandsbröd is the ultimate owner, maintaining its independence as one of the largest family-run bakeries in Sweden. Their focus continues to be on traditional recipes, local sourcing, and environmental responsibility, ensuring the legacy of Leksand crispbread remains a staple of Swedish culinary culture.
