Waitrose Duchy Organic is a premium brand with a unique heritage, originally established as Duchy Originals by King Charles III (then the Prince of Wales) in 1990. The brand was founded to promote organic farming and sustainability, with its first product being the now-iconic oaten biscuit made from oats grown on the Home Farm at Highgrove. The brand's philosophy centers on the belief that nature can be preserved through high-quality organic farming practices.
In 2009, during a period of financial restructuring, the brand entered into an exclusive partnership with the British supermarket retailer Waitrose. This agreement eventualy led to the brand being rebranded as Waitrose Duchy Organic. Under this arrangement, Waitrose manages the production, distribution, and marketing of the range while maintaining the organic standards and charitable mission of the original brand.
The manufacturing process is primarily centered in the United Kingdom, utilizing a network of organic farmers and artisan producers. A significant aspect of the brand is its philanthropic impact; royalties from the sale of products are donated to The Prince of Wales's Charitable Fund, supporting various environmental and community projects. Ownership remains tied to the Duchy of Cornwall, with the retail operations overseen by the John Lewis Partnership.
