Alter Eco is a pioneering brand in fair trade and organic products. Founded in 1998 in France by Tristan Lecomte, it started as a project to promote fair trade through various products like coffee, tea, and chocolate. The French branch of Alter Eco was eventually acquired by Bjorg et Compagnie, which is part of the Ecotone group.
While the cocoa is sourced from small-scale farmers in Peru, the manufacturing of the chocolate bars typically takes place in Switzerland, known for its expertise in chocolate production. The brand focuses on the 'Fair for Life' certification, ensuring fair remuneration for small producers and biological agriculture standards. Today, Ecotone, headquartered in Lyon, France, oversees the brand's distribution and strategy across Europe, maintaining its commitment to biodiversity and sustainable food systems.
