Milka is one of the world's most recognizable confectionery brands, famous for its distinctive lilac-colored packaging and the 'Milka Cow.' The brand's history began in 1901 when Swiss chocolatier Philippe Suchard first registered the name, which combines the German words for its primary ingredients: Milch (milk) and Kakao (cocoa). Although it originated in Switzerland, it has since become a global powerhouse in the chocolate industry.
Today, the brand is owned by Mondelez International, an American multi-national food company. While the brand carries strong Swiss heritage, the majority of its production now takes place in Lörrach, Germany, along with other specialized factories across Europe. This ensures that the 'Alpine Milk' quality is maintained while meeting global demand. The ownership has transitioned through several major corporate mergers, moving from Suchard to Interfood, then to Jacobs Suchard, Kraft Foods, and finally to the Mondelez spin-off in 2012.
