The 1 Euro coin is a bimetallic coin used within the Eurozone, which consists of 20 European Union member states. It was first introduced for physical use on January 1, 2002. The production of Euro coins occurs across various national mints within the European Union, such as the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in Italy or the Monnaie de Paris in France.
Ownership and regulation of the currency are managed by the European Central Bank (ECB) and the national central banks of the Eurosystem. Unlike private brands, the Euro is a sovereign currency. Each participating country has a standard common side showing the value and a map of Europe, while the reverse side features a national design specific to the issuing country. The coin in the image shows the common side.
