Maynard's is a distinguished Port wine brand with a deep historical lineage in the Douro region of Portugal. The Maynard family history in the wine trade dates back to 1659, when Walter Maynard, the first English consul in Porto, was active in the region. Today, the brand is managed under the expertise of the van Zeller family, renowned figures in the Portuguese wine industry. Specifically, it is part of the Barão de Vilar portfolio, established by brothers Fernando and Álvaro van Zeller. This Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) 2017 is produced from grapes grown in the Douro Valley and bottled in Vila Nova de Gaia.
The production of Maynard's Port follows traditional Portuguese methods, including aging in large oak vats to preserve the fruit's intensity and complexity. As an LBV, it represents a single-harvest wine that remains in wood for four to six years before bottling, offering a profile that sits between a Ruby Port and a full Vintage Port. The brand remains under the ultimate ownership of the van Zeller family through their company Barão de Vilar, maintaining its status as an authentic Portuguese-run family enterprise.
