ColaCao is one of Spain's most iconic brands, originally launched in 1945 by the company Nutrexpa in Barcelona. Known for its characteristic 'lumps' that do not dissolve easily in cold milk, it has become a staple of Spanish breakfast culture for decades. The brand's history is deeply rooted in the post-civil war era, where it gained popularity through clever radio advertising and its association with energy and health.
In 2015, the original parent company, Nutrexpa, underwent a major demerger, splitting into two separate entities: Idilia Foods and Adam Foods. Idilia Foods retained the flagship cocoa brands, including ColaCao and Nocilla. Today, the product is primarily manufactured at Idilia's specialized facility in Parets del Vallès, near Barcelona, maintaining its status as a leading Spanish-owned food group that exports to several international markets while remaining headquartered in Catalonia.
