Android is a mobile operating system based on a modified version of the Linux kernel and other open-source software, designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. While Google developed the software, there is no single 'Android phone' manufacturer. Instead, the Android brand encompasses a vast ecosystem of hardware produced by various global manufacturers including Samsung, Google (Pixel), Xiaomi, and Motorola.
The brand's origin traces back to Android Inc., founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003, which was later acquired by Google in 2005. Today, manufacturing is highly distributed. Most high-volume production occurs in industrial hubs within China, Vietnam, and India. Ownership of the Android platform remains with Google (under Alphabet Inc.), which provides the base operating system to manufacturers via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and proprietary Google Mobile Services (GMS).
