Founded in 1944 by Stig Hjelmquist, the company initially gained fame for introducing high-quality table tennis products that became synonymous with professional play. Over decades, the brand expanded into winter sports items, notably the 'Snowracer' sleds, and outdoor power equipment such as lawnmowers.

Today, the brand's legacy is split between two distinct entities. STIGA Sports AB, headquartered in Eskilstuna, Sweden, manages the sports and hobby categories, including table tennis and winter sports. Meanwhile, the gardening and lawn care division is operated by STIGA Group (formerly Global Garden Products), which is headquartered in Italy. Manufacturing is distributed globally, with specialized factories in Sweden, Italy, Slovakia, and China to serve international markets.
