LINE is a globally recognized communication application originally launched in June 2011. It was developed by NHN Japan, the Japanese subsidiary of the South Korean internet company Naver, in the aftermath of the Tōhoku earthquake to provide a reliable means of communication during emergencies. Since its inception, the app has evolved into a 'Super App,' offering far more than instant messaging, including digital payment systems through LINE Pay, news delivery, and a vast ecosystem of stickers and gaming.
Today, the brand is under the management of LY Corporation, a strategic joint venture created to consolidate major digital services. This ownership structure represents a significant partnership between Japan's SoftBank Group and South Korea's Naver Corporation. While the app has a massive user base across Asia—particularly in Japan, Thailand, and Taiwan—its technical development and data infrastructure continue to be supported through collaborative efforts in both Japan and Korea.
