VARTA is a historic German battery manufacturer with roots dating back to 1887. The Super Heavy Duty AAA batteries are specifically designed for low-drain devices such as remote controls, clocks, and smoke detectors, utilizing zinc-carbon technology for cost-effective energy.
While VARTA AG maintains its headquarters in Germany, the production of its various battery lines is distributed globally. Consumer alkaline and basic zinc-carbon batteries (like the Super Heavy Duty line) are often manufactured through long-term partnerships in Asia (primarily China) or Poland, while high-end rechargeable and industrial cells are frequently produced in Germany.
The ownership history of VARTA is complex; the consumer battery division was acquired in 2002 by the American company Rayovac (later Spectrum Brands). However, in 2019, VARTA AG (the original German entity) successfully bought back the VARTA Consumer Batteries division from Spectrum Brands, effectively returning the global consumer brand to its German roots and unifying it under the original parent company.
