It was founded in 1953 by Dr. Paul Janssen in Beerse, Belgium, originally operating as a private research laboratory focused on groundbreaking drug discovery. Dr. Janssen is credited with the development of over 80 medications, significantly impacting fields such as psychiatry, gastroenterology, and pain management.

In 1961, the company was acquired by the American multinational corporation Johnson & Johnson. Since then, Janssen has served as the core of Johnson & Johnson’s research and development-based pharmaceutical segment. Today, the brand is officially known as Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine.
