Şalom Newspaper

Şalom is a prominent Jewish weekly newspaper based in Istanbul, Turkey. Established on October 29, 1947, by Turkish-Jewish journalist Avram Leyon, the publication serves as a vital cultural and informational pillar for the Jewish community in Turkey. Its name is derived from the Hebrew word 'Shalom,' meaning peace, reflecting its mission of fostering communication and harmony.

The newspaper is historically significant for its use of Ladino (Judaeo-Spanish), the traditional language of Sephardic Jews who settled in the Ottoman Empire after the expulsion from Spain in 1492. While most of the publication transitioned to Turkish in 1984 to reach a younger audience, it continues to maintain a page in Ladino to preserve the linguistic heritage of the community.

Today, Şalom is owned by the Gözlem Gazetecilik Basın ve Yayın company, which is closely associated with the Turkish Jewish community's administrative structures.
