Meiji Bulgaria Yogurt is a flagship dairy product produced by Meiji Co., Ltd. and is widely recognized as the best-selling yogurt brand in Japan. The brand's history dates back to the early 1970s following the 1970 Osaka World Expo, where Meiji executives were inspired by authentic Bulgarian yogurt. After several years of development and obtaining official permission from the Bulgarian government to use the country's name, the product was launched in 1971.
The yogurt is manufactured using the traditional LB81 lactic acid bacteria strain, which originated in Bulgaria. While the brand carries the Bulgarian name and heritage, the actual manufacturing for the Japanese market takes place in Japan at facilities owned by Meiji. The product shown is the fat-free (脂 肪 0) plain variety, which is highly regarded for its smooth texture and health benefits.
Ownership of the brand remains with Meiji Holdings Co., Ltd., a massive Japanese multinational conglomerate headquartered in Tokyo. The company oversees a wide range of food, pharmaceutical, and health-related businesses, maintaining a dominant presence in the Asian dairy industry while continuing its long-standing partnership with Bulgarian dairy traditions.
