Originally founded by Robert McVitie and Charles Edward Price, the brand became famous for inventing the Digestive biscuit in 1892. This version, marketed in French-speaking regions as "Sablés Anglais L'Original", refers to their iconic semi-sweet wholemeal biscuit known for its crumbly texture and high wheat content.

While McVitie's is a quintessential British brand with major production hubs in the UK (such as Harlesden and Manchester), its ownership has evolved through global mergers.
