Discover where a brand or product originates
Biotherm is an upscale French cosmetics brand founded in 1952. The brand's origin story is centered on the discovery of mineral-rich thermal spring water in the Pyrenees mountains of southern France. Jeanine Marissal, a French biochemist, was the first to harness thermal plankton from these springs for use in skin treatments, leading to the creation of the brand name—a portmanteau of 'Biology' and 'Thermal'.
In 1970, the brand was acquired by L'Oréal, which helped scale its distribution globally. Today, Biotherm is recognized as a pioneer in skin biology, particularly known for its 'Life Plankton' ingredient. While it remains a quintessentially French brand with significant manufacturing operations in France, as part of the massive L'Oréal portfolio, its products are distributed worldwide and components may be sourced through the group's global supply chain. The brand continues to lead in the premium skincare market, specifically with its dedicated 'Biotherm Homme' line for men.
