Airfix is the oldest and best-known manufacturer of plastic scale model kits in the United Kingdom and a household name in the hobby world. Founded in 1939 by Nicholas Kove, a Hungarian businessman, the brand initially produced rubber-inflated toys before transitioning into injection-molded plastic. The first mass-market plastic model kit, a Ferguson TE20 tractor, was released in 1949, marking the beginning of a legacy that would define the 'Airfix' name as a synonym for plastic modeling in Britain.
Over the decades, Airfix expanded its range to include iconic aircraft like the Supermarine Spitfire, as well as ships, vehicles, and figures. Despite its popularity, the company faced significant financial challenges in the late 20th century, leading to several changes in ownership including its acquisition by Humbrol in 1986. Following the collapse of Humbrol's parent company, the brand was rescued in 2006 by Hornby Hobbies Ltd, which has since revitalized the line with high-quality new tooling and digital design techniques.
While originally manufactured entirely in the UK, production moved significantly to the Far East (notably China) and Europe (France) during its period under Humbrol. Under Hornby's stewardship, production is primarily located in India and China, though some premium and specialized lines have seen manufacturing return to the United Kingdom to ensure quality control and supply chain efficiency.
