Aral is Germany's largest petrol station network, recognized by its distinct blue and white branding. Founded in 1898 in Bochum, the company initially focused on benzene-based fuels and benzene-coal products. The name 'Aral' was introduced in 1924, derived from the chemical components of the fuel: Aromatics (AR) and Aliphatics (AL).

Historically, Aral was a cornerstone of German industrial energy, belonging to the Veba and Degussa groups for decades. In 2002, the brand was acquired by BP (British Petroleum) during a major restructuring of the German energy market. To this day, BP operates its entire German retail fuel business under the Aral brand, which is known for its high-quality Ultimate fuels and the 'PetitBistro' or 'REWE To Go' convenience store concepts. While the brand is quintessentially German in origin and consumer perception, it is now part of one of the world's largest global energy companies.
