Kona Bicycle

Founded in 1988 in Vancouver, British Columbia, by Dan Gerhard and Jacob Heilbron, Kona Bicycle Company has grown into a globally recognized brand in the cycling world. While its roots are deeply Canadian, its operations were later headquartered in Ferndale, Washington, following its initial expansion into the US market. The brand is celebrated for its contribution to mountain biking culture and its diverse range of high-performance bikes.

Historically, Kona followed a standard industry model where design and engineering took place in North America, while manufacturing was outsourced to specialized factories in Taiwan and China to maintain a balance of quality and scale. The brand underwent a significant ownership change in 2022 when it was acquired by Kent Outdoors. However, in a major turn of events in early 2024, the original founders Dan Gerhard and Jacob Heilbron successfully bought the company back, restoring it to its status as an independent, rider-owned business.
