Silk is a pioneering brand in the plant-based dairy alternative market, originally established in the United States. Founded in 1977 by Whit Hull under the company WhiteWave Foods, the brand initially specialized in soy products. Over the decades, it has expanded its portfolio significantly to include almond, oat, and cashew-based beverages, becoming a household name in North America.
In the Canadian market, Silk products are often produced locally to satisfy consumer demand and maintain freshness. The packaging prominently features a 'Canadian Grown Soy' logo, highlighting that the soy used in this specific product is sourced from Canadian farms. This local sourcing is a key part of the brand's identity in the region.
Ownership of the Silk brand has transitioned through major corporate acquisitions. WhiteWave Foods was formerly a subsidiary of Dean Foods before being spun off as an independent public company. In 2017, the multinational food giant Danone S.A. acquired WhiteWave Foods for approximately $12.5 billion. Today, Silk is operated by Danone North America, with its global headquarters in Paris, France.
