Salewa is a premier technical mountain sports brand with deep roots in the Dolomites. The brand was founded in Munich, Germany, in 1935 by Josef Liebhart, and it initially specialized in leather and upholstery products before expanding into backpacks and ski poles. Over the decades, Salewa evolved into a leader for alpine equipment, footwear, and apparel, eventually moving its core operations and headquarters to Italy to be closer to the heart of the European mountaineering scene.
Today, Salewa is a cornerstone brand of the OberAlp Group, a family-owned management house headquartered in Bolzano, Italy. While the engineering and design of the footwear take place in the Italian Dolomites, manufacturing is distributed across high-capacity specialist facilities in Europe and Asia. The Mountain Trainer series, known for its Vibram soles and Gore-Tex membranes, is frequently produced in Romania and other specialized footwear manufacturing hubs to ensure technical precision and durability.
The OberAlp Group continues to manage Salewa with a focus on sustainability and high-performance alpine innovation, maintaining the brand’s status as a top choice for professional mountaineers and trekking enthusiasts worldwide.
