Affligem is a historic Belgian abbey beer brand that traces its roots back to 1074, when it was originally brewed by Benedictine monks at the Affligem Abbey in Opwijk, Belgium. For centuries, the monks maintained the brewing tradition, creating a signature range of blonde and double ales that became famous throughout the region.
Today, while the beer is still produced according to the original abbey recipes and under the supervision of the monks to ensure authenticity, the brewing operations have been industrialized. The brand is now part of the global portfolio of Heineken N.V., one of the world's largest brewers. Ownership transitioned as Heineken acquired Alken-Maes, the brewery that held the rights to the Affligem name. It remains a premium flagship for Belgian abbey-style beer, primarily produced at the Alken-Maes brewery in Belgium.
