Hovis is one of Britain’s most iconic heritage brands, dating back to 1886 when Richard "Stoney" Smith patented a method for steam-cooking wheat germ to preserve its nutritional value. The brand became famous for its commitment to quality milling and its deeply rooted history in the British diet. Traditionally, Hovis is produced within various bakeries across the United Kingdom to ensure freshness for local distribution.
Over its century-long history, the brand has seen several ownership changes. After being a staple of the Rank Hovis McDougall (RHM) portfolio for decades, it was acquired by Premier Foods in 2007. In a significant shift in 2020, Hovis was acquired by the UK-based private equity firm Endless LLP, marking a return to focused British ownership. The brand continues to be a market leader in the sliced bread sector, emphasizing its British heritage and traditional baking methods.
