Bertolli is one of the world's most recognized olive oil brands, with a history dating back to 1865 in Lucca, Tuscany. Founded by Francesco Bertolli and his wife Caterina, the brand began as a small trading shop and eventually pioneered the export of olive oil to the United States and other regions to serve Italian emigrants.
Over the decades, ownership of the Bertolli brand has transitioned through major global corporations. In 2008, Unilever sold its olive oil business, including the Bertolli brand, to the Spanish food giant Deoleo. Today, Deoleo remains the ultimate owner of the olive oil division, while other product categories like sauces are owned separately by Mizkan Group.
Because Bertolli utilizes a global supply chain to maintain consistent quality and quantity, its olive oils are typically sourced and packaged in multiple countries. Most blends use olives harvested from major producing regions including Spain, Italy, Greece, and Tunisia, often bottled in Italy or Spain depending on the specific market and product line.
