Amstel is a widely recognized Dutch beer brand, originally founded in 1870 in Amsterdam by De Pesters and J.H. van Marwijk Kooy. The brand was named after the Amstel River, which provided the ice used for cooling the beer during the brewing process. In 1968, Amstel was acquired by Heineken N.V., another legendary Dutch brewing company.

Today, Amstel is one of the pillars of the Heineken portfolio. While the brand is quintessentially Dutch and continues to be brewed in the Netherlands, Heineken's global reach means that Amstel products are also brewed under license or in Heineken-owned facilities in various countries around the world to meet local demand. In the Netherlands, it remains a domestic staple and is often distributed directly by Heineken's local commercial entities.
