Häagen-Dazs is a globally recognized premium ice cream brand. Despite its Danish-sounding name—created by its founders to evoke an aura of Old World craftsmanship—the brand was actually established in the Bronx, New York, in 1960 by Reuben and Rose Mattus. The name is completely fictional and has no meaning in any Scandinavian language.

While the brand originated in the United States, its ownership structure is split internationally. In the U.S. and Canada, the brand is licensed to Froneri, a joint venture between Nestlé and R&R Ice Cream. In the rest of the world, including Europe and the Netherlands, the brand is owned and operated by the American multinational General Mills. Most Häagen-Dazs products sold in the European market are manufactured at the brand's primary production facility in Tilloy-lès-Mofflaines, France.
