Java was originally developed by James Gosling and his team at Sun Microsystems, an American technology company. The project, initially called "Oak," began in the early 1990s as a language for digital consumer devices but famously pivoted to become a foundational technology for the World Wide Web and enterprise computing. Since its official release in 1995, it has grown into one of the most widely used programming languages in the world.
In 2010, the brand underwent a massive shift when Oracle Corporation acquired Sun Microsystems in a multi-billion dollar deal. Through this acquisition, Oracle became the ultimate owner and primary steward of the Java platform, including the Java Development Kit (JDK) and the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Oracle continues to manage the official roadmap and licensing of Java SE, while also leading the OpenJDK community, which provides an open-source implementation of the platform.
As a digital product, Java is 'manufactured' through software engineering and compilation conducted primarily at Oracle’s development centers in the United States, with global contributions from engineers worldwide via the OpenJDK project. It is distributed globally through digital downloads and is embedded in billions of devices ranging from mobile phones and enterprise servers to integrated circuits and IoT devices.
