The brand was created to make customer support software more accessible and user-friendly. In 2009, the company moved its headquarters to San Francisco, California, to be closer to the heart of the global tech industry.

Technically, as a cloud-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) product, 'manufacturing' occurs through code development and server hosting primarily in the United States and global data centers. In 2022, Zendesk was acquired by an investor group led by Hellman & Friedman and Permira in a multi-billion dollar deal, taking the company private to focus on long-term growth and its AI-driven product suite.
