Verkade is one of the most iconic Dutch confectionery brands, carrying a rich history that dates back to 1886. Founded by Ericus Gerhardus Verkade in Zaandam, it originally started as a steam bread and rusk factory before expanding into the chocolate and biscuit products for which it is world-renowned today. The 'Extra Puur' line represents their premium dark chocolate offerings, emphasizing high cocoa content and traditional Dutch processing methods.
While Verkade remains deeply rooted in its Dutch heritage—with a significant portion of its production still taking place in the original region of Zaandam—its ownership has transitioned through several multinational hands over the decades. After being part of United Biscuits and later Yildiz Holding, the brand is currently under the umbrella of pladis, a global snacking company. This ownership structure allows Verkade to maintain its local identity while benefiting from international distribution and supply chain networks.
